Shoulder pain is very common across all ages, different problems arise in different age groups. Children tend to suffer more traumatic injuries, these injuries can cause cartilage tear, labral tear or instability like dislocations. Children who are active in sports like volleyball, swimming and baseball may suffer from overuse injuries such as inflammation of tendons and muscles of the shoulder which is called Tendinitis. Shoulder pain in young females between the ages of 12 to 16 years old is almost always due to muscle weakness around the shoulder which sometime will be accompanied by clicking in the shoulder.
The most common source of shoulder pain in adults is due to life time use and sometime overuse. Most adult’s with shoulder pain will have any of the following conditions:
- Overuse Tendinitis
- Tendinosis( degeneration of rotator cuff )
- Rotator cuff tears
- Frozen shoulder
- Calcific Tendinitis of rotator cuff or biceps tendon
If you sustained an injury to your shoulder or have been having shoulder pain for days or weeks and the pain has been getting worse then there is definitely some pathology is happening in your shoulder that could become a serious problem if you ignore it. Physiotherapy consultation to diagnose and treat your problem is necessary to avoid serious consequences that could ultimately require you to have surgery.
A recent 2014 study out of Finland showed no benefit to choosing surgery over Physiotherapy in the management of patients with small rotator cuff tears.
